In casting production, we often hear foundry manufacturers say that this is gray cast iron, that is ductile iron, many times we are difficult to distinguish. So, what is the difference between ductile iron and gray cast iron?
Ductile iron is a kind of cast iron. Nodular cast iron is a cast iron with spheroidal graphite crystals obtained after casting by adding a certain amount of nodular agent to the hot metal before casting, and then adding a certain amount of inoculant to promote the preparation of graphite to complete the graphitization. The function index of ductile iron is better than that of malleable cast iron, and the price is cheaper. Compared with gray cast iron, ductile cast iron has better tensile strength, strong corrosion resistance and toughness.
Gray cast iron is the most used in cast iron, in the total output of all kinds of cast iron, gray cast iron accounts for more than 80%. The graphite in gray cast iron exists in the form of flakes, and the fracture is often gray and black. Compared with nodular cast iron, gray cast iron has great advantages over ordinary carbon steel, although it has poor mechanical properties. The graphite in gray cast iron can greatly enhance the wear resistance and shock absorption of cast iron.
